2012 Maya Glyph Award Design in Typography and Advertising

This is a recent award design in the international annual of advertising we made for an European advertising company in Germany. As experts in Maya epigraphy and publicity designers, they were looking for something modern in glyphs.

Our design is interesting because it includes the reading process as you were reading Maya glyphs with modern words. The main idea in the decipherment is that you need a pair of signs in each row that makes a phonetic sound syllable. If you add textures to each letter, then you get a combined visual and modern effect.

There are other design considerations including the shape and positions of the symbols that create more impact in this striking advertising design theme. The typography includes the most popular fonts, Arial Black and Helvetica Neue.

2012 Maya Life and Death – Dresden Codex

2012 Mayan Kingdom – The Tree of Life

Each Maya kingdom is centered in a general theme, the majestic Tree of Life. For the Maya, it represents the axis mundi, the stable world center. It constitutes a symbolic vertical line–like the line of balance on a spinning top–that unites the three realms of underworld, earth, and heavens.

In Maya language, the Tree of Life is called Yaxche and it is the axis mundi as the navel of the world. A Yaxche (Ceiba pentandra) could be found at the center of most pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cities. The Tree of Life is a natural analog to the constructed Mayan temple, which was also a vertical structure that connects the subterranean to heavenly realms.

New Set of Three Posters For 2012 Movie

For those who still do not know the film synopsis of Emmerich’s 2012 movie, here is the summary.

‘ Centuries ago, the Mayans left us their calendar, with a clear end date and all that it implies. This week, Sony Pictures released a new set of three posters for the 2012 movie. They are disturbing as hell and not rated for an audience under 18 years old.

This is a modern Mayan version of the Xibalba game for 2012. One against all and all against one in the ball court.
